Intel Core i7 975 3.33GHz Processor Tested

When Intel pushed the Core i7 out the door it was not to top its rival, AMD, but to top its own Core 2 CPUs. We saw the i7 simply trounce on just about all other single socket systems (and some multi-socket systems as well).

Intel did not sit back and relax, though; they took the C0 stepping and tweaked it to give it an extra edge. Soon everyone was talking about the D0 stepping of the i7; it had better headroom, better thermal tolerance and even seemed slightly faster than the same clocked C0 CPU.

Again Intel did not stop there. Instead they pushed out another flagship CPU. This is the i7 975, a D0 stepping monster that looks like it can take on all comers.

We managed to get our hands on one and take it for a spin against the current champ, the i7 965 C0 stepping CPU. Let’s see if it really is worthy of the crown.

Intel Core i7 On Linux

By now most of you should be familiar with the Core i7 processor family, which is based upon intel's Nehalem architecture. The Core i7 series was introduced with a new CPU socket, LGA-1366, which replaces the LGA-775 socket and is not backwards compatible. Like what has been done with AMD processors for years, with the CPU socket and new Core i7 series comes moving the memory controller onto the CPU die. The integrated memory controller supports three DDR3 memory channels. The Core i7 also introduces the QuickPath Interconnect interface as a competitor to AMD's HyperTransport for linking the processor to the X58 Chipset. The initial Core i7 processors are built with a 45nm process and have approximately 731 million transistors.

Intel i7 Core 920 ‘Over Clocked’ - Intel i7 Core 965 Extreme Edition

Intel i7 Core Family of processors was launched in November 2008, Five months ago and since then they have become the talk to the town for the Tech Enthusiasts. It has not disappointed anybody with its performance. They are the fastest processor on earth is now an accepted fact. But as usual, Intel has been very harsh with the processor prices and in the case of Intel i7 Core 965, it is a whooping 1000 USD. It is the most expensive processor too. Performance always has a price to pay. But here you will see that is not true! You can buy a complete PC with as much performance as delivered by the Intel i7 Core 965 Extreme Edition and more in some cases at the quarter price of what the monster i7 Core 965 EE would normally cost. It sounds a little strange but just scroll the page and look for yourself.

For the Benchmarks we selected a computer with the following configurations that allowed us a stable over clocking of the processor without overheating it. We had a ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a 6GB triple channel Corsair Dominator 2 kit that’s rated to 1,600MHz with 8-8-8-24-2T timings at just 1.65V. We arranged a Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme mounting bracket, which provide tremendous cooling power for this monster running at no lower than 130 W idle.

Intel Core i7 Processors

There are only a select few events in the PC hardware world that get hardcore enthusiasts truly excited. For example, when popular trade shows like Computex, IDF, and CES take place, there is a fair amount of buzz. Also, anytime the major players in graphics release next-generation GPUs, things definitely heat up; or likewise when a hot new game hits. Finally, when either of the processor big guns, Intel or AMD unleash new CPU micro-architectures on the world, you can almost bet on the community to come alive with enthusiasm. We're sure we've missed a few other momentous occasions as well, but you get the gist. It takes something new and exciting to get a PC Enthusiast's pulse racing.

Thankfully, today is one of those times. Although Intel won't be officially launching their Core i7 processors, formerly codenamed Nehalem, and the X58 Express chipset until sometime later in the month, we've had them in house for a while now and can finally show you all the goods. We've tested every Core i7 speed grade that will be available at launch, along with at trio of X58 Express based motherboards. We've even thrown in some high-resolution multi-GPU SLI and CrossFireX testing for good measure as well.

There's a lot to cover, so we'll keep the introduction short and dive right in. Below are some Core i7 features and specifications to whet your appetite--the main course is available on the pages ahead.
